    Laguna Beach

    Laguna Beach

There little less than one month until the most romantic holiday of the year, so if you have a significant other (and even if you’re single!), how about planning a short holiday?

Since February 14 falls on a Monday, a weekend trip would be a great way to celebrate Valentine’s, even if on Monday you have to get back to work. So surprise your significant other with a trip to a romantic destination, or grab your friends and take a singles’ holiday anyway. Here are the top 5 Valentine’s Day destinations for 2011.

    Flagstaff, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, all they see is vast expanses of desert, cacti and scorching heat, but Flagstaff is an exception to the rule. Surrounded by forest, with the prospect of the San Francisco Peaks in the background, Flagstaff is the perfect destination for outdoorsy people.

February is still pretty much winter at over 6000 ft altitude, so you can indulge in a variety of winter sports with your significant other. Do some Alpine skiing, or skate on the permanent indoor ice rink, and go out for a romantic dinner afterward.

    Savannah, Georgia

For couples who are into history and/or architecture, Savannah is a great Valentine’s Day destination. The historic riverside birthplace of Georgia is ripe with historic mansions, museums, and even haunted places (Bonaventure Cemetery).

Spending the weekend before Valentine’s Day sightseeing is not a bad way to bond with your beloved, especially if you’re visiting sights like the River Street, Forsyth Park, or Telfair Museum.

    Montego Bay, Jamaica

Are both of you in need of a holiday in the sun that will make you melt after the long winter months? Montego Bay is the ideal combination of urban and beach paradises, with the benefits of both. Montego Bay has some world class resorts, amazing beaches and several great golf courses (if that’s your idea of a romantic outing).

You can simply soak up the sun, do some snorkeling and indulge in the local delicacies, or even do some sightseeing (Croydon Plantation is a very interesting place for history lovers).

    Laguna Beach, California

California is not all that warm in February, but you can still catch some well-deserved rays. Besides, winter is off season, which means that you will have the beach all to yourselves (and the occasional savvy traveler).

The ocean is probably too cold for surfing or swimming, but you can still enact the cliched but still popular long walks on the beach, and maybe even enroll in a local art class and express your feelings through art.

    Stowe, Vermont

Hiding away in a historic village surrounded by amazing scenery is not a bad plan for Valentine’s Day, especially if you want to do some outdoor sports too. The list of activities that you can do at Stowe in winter is shorter than what you can do in summer, but there are excellent opportunities for downhill skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Plus, there are some very nice spas too.
