Best and cheapest ski resorts this winter

The holidays might be almost over, but the winter is still only starting! Especially when it comes to the skiing season, which can last well into spring. But seeing as the potential traveler’s budget is probably exhausted by all that Christmas shopping, not many people will be thinking of skiing trips at this time.

However, if you want to take a holiday at a mountain resort at the beginning of 2011, you should start looking up a few places that meet your needs. For all those travelers who don’t want to spend too much on their ski holidays, we’ve compiled a list of the best and cheapest ski resorts this winter.

Brides-Les-Bains, France

The French mountains are a hot spot for ski resorts, but they are not known for their affordability. However, Brides-Les-Bains in France is one of those rare cases where something that should be very expensive is actually tolerably priced. Brides is surrounded by some of the best known resorts in Europe (Courchevel and Méribel, for example), but it has a very non-commercial, small town feel.

On the downside, the nightlife in Brides-Les-Bains doesn’t even come close to what you can find in larger resorts, but the accommodation is more varied and cheaper. If your priority is skiing and generally enjoying the snow, you will be well pleased with this resort.

High and Low Tatras, Slovakia

Slovakia is slowly making a name for itself when it comes to winter sports, but the High and Low Tatras is still one of the most overlooked ski areas in the world. If you are a beginner or intermediate skier, the slopes at the High Trata will be better suited for you, otherwise you can go to Lower Trata and enjoy some serious thrills. The hotels in the area are very affordable by international standards, and there are also some very good traditional restaurants that you can try.

Lake Tahoe, United States

There are over 500 ski runs in the Lake Tahoe area, so if it comes to variety, there is plenty to choose from. The Lake is known for world class skiing, snowmobiling and ice skating, but while the standards are definitely very high, so is the offer. There are so many resorts in the area that any time of the season you will surely find at least a few of them offering deals on accommodation or vacation packages.

Soldeu – El Tarter, Andorra

Andorra might be tiny, but it does have some very good ski runs. Actually, when it comes to Europe, Andorra is the original budget destination. If you are a beginner and you’re still trying to find you footing, Soldeu is the ideal resort for you. The lift pass prices are quite reasonable, and there are several very good budget restaurants in the area.
