  • Adventure travel in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is one of those Central Asia countries that one doesn’t read a lot about in tourist brochures, despite their huge potential. Kyrgyzstan has had some rough times lately, politically speaking, but the internal turmoil in the country is finally subsiding and many areas are now safe for travel.

Visitors who are looking for adventure travel will find a lot to see in Kyrgyzstan, a country of astounding natural beauty. In addition to that, getting a visa to Kyrgyzstan is easier than in other Central Asian country, and it is sufficiently little known to satisfy even the most adventure-hungry traveler.

    Horseback riding

The Kyrgyz people are proud of their nomadic origins, and while the nomad lifestyle has been all but abandoned and people have moved to urban areas, the best way to see the country is on horseback.

Public transport such as buses or shared taxis are very cheap, but the natural beauty of the countryside is best explored outside a motorized vehicle. Several travel agencies offer tours on horseback, and while not all Kyrgyz are born on horseback nowadays (as an old saying goes), they are still masters of horsemanship.

    Biking

Long distance biking is very popular in Kyrgyzstan,n although not among the locals. There are several well known treks around Issyk Kul, and while you can attempt a cycling tour on your own, it is better to arrange something with an agency. The pros of bike tours in Kyrgyzstan are many: there’s very little traffic, camping in the wild is safe and cheap (most of the time for free, even) and cycling is a great opportunity to meet the friendly locals.

    Trekking

Trekking through Kyrgyzstan can take you to altitudes of well over 4000 meters. Experienced climbers should go for Tien Shan’s highest peak, Peak Pobeda (over 7000 meters high). However, there are many routes that are very easy and beginners will have no problems climbing them.

During treks, you will also have the opportunity for wildlife and nature tours that will allow you to explore the natural beauty of Kyrgyzstan. You can book a place on a trek tour, and this way you will have full board and lodging in addition to a guided trip.

    Yurt Camping

Yurt camping is becoming more and more popular, and not only in the Mongolian steppes, but in Kyrgyzstan as well. The southern part of the country is pretty much isolated geographically by a range of high mountains, so the southern parts of the country are wild and untamed. You can experience the traditional way of life of the Kyrgyz, learn about local customs and traditions and discover a fascinating culture.
