  • The best local music scenes in the US

If you’re tired of TV shows that produce pop stars that vanish after living out their fifteen minutes of fame, it’s time for you to get acquainted with the real music scene of the US. There are countless great artists in this country, but there are even more awesome musicians and acts which haven’t made it into the mainstream yet.

And if you want to get to know them, you’ll have to do a bit of traveling. Many great artists have started their career in smaller cities, so prick up your ears next time you’re visiting any of the following music scenes, because you might just hear some future stars play.

    Athens, Georgia

Athens is one of those cities that everybody will love, regardless of their musical tastes. Every imaginable music genre has fans and singers in Athens. There are many music venues that cater even to the most eclectic tastes.

If you want to see some up-and-coming acts, pay a visit to 40 Watt Club, and if you want to spend an evening chewing on a delicious stake and gulping down the local beer, go to the Melting Point. Athens has already produced some of the best musicians of this century, like REM or The B-52s, and it still has some 400 local bands to show to the world.

    Austin, Texas

The local sound in Austin is a blend of (alt) country and a little bit (indie) rock and roll, and the music scene here often gets compared to the one in Nashville. There are over 200 music venues in Austin, so you’ll have a hard time picking out only a few. One of the most popular places is The Continental Club, sometimes called ‘the grand-daddy’ of all music scenes in the US.

It has been open since 1955, and it is known throughout the states as one of the best venues for live music. If you want a bite to eat before a show, pop into the Star Seeds Cafe, a 24 hour cafe where musicians and partiers alike gather in the evenings.

    Omaha, Nebraska

One of the liveliest indie musicians of the past 15 years in the US have gathered (or simply sprung up?) in Omaha. Many of the bands who started out in Omaha have reached international stardom, but you can still see many of them playing at the old locales where they played gigs at the beginning of their careers. The Cog Factory and the Ranch Bowl are two of the most prominent venues in the city, and they helped to launch many popular indie bands of the 2000’s.

    Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville has always had a great music scene, although some say that it has been legging behind for the past few years. Regardless, many of the music venues that closed not long ago are opening their doors again, and the future of the scene seems to be quite bright.

Phoenix Hill Tavern is one of the long-time supporters of the local musicians, and every week you can hear local bands play here. Bulldawg Cafe is another great venue where you can ear local bands n weekends, and plus, their lunch menus are excellent.
