  • Top 10 places to see in Africa

    Dogon Country, Mali

To continue our series of posts on the main sights that are an absolute must on each continent, here are the top 10 places in Africa that are so amazing that it’s a real shame if you take a tour o the continent. Obviously, it’s nearly impossible to visit all of Africa at once.

The continent is so large, the cultures so diverse and the landscapes so amazing that it would probably take years to see all the visit-worthy places. So if you have a dilemma about where to go on your African tour, here is a list of places that we are sure you’ll just love.

    1. Masai Mara, Kenya

Compared to the tame wildlife of Europe, Africa has a fierce and wonderful fauna. Lions look so much more impressive when you see them in real life and not on Animal Planet (or in the zoo), and you don’t even have to brave the elements, just book a safari tour in Masai Mara.

    2. Victoria Falls, Zambia

The much praised Victoria Falls really do live up to their fame, and you’ll be graced with one of the most amazing watery spectacle that you can see on the planet. The plummeting water and the resulting spray will make you feel like you’re in the middle of a thunderstorm.

    3. Giza, Egypt

There are so many archaeological sites in Egypt that it’s very difficult to choose which ones to see in the span of a few days, so the best idea is perhaps to go for the most well-known, the breath-taking ancient pyramids at Giza.

    4. Marrakesh, Morocco

Marrakesh is large, noisy, crowded, even dirty at times,  and utterly fascinating. The cultural and historical heritage of the city is astounding, but your brain is not the only thing that will be dazzled. Take a walk through a marketplace and let your sense be assaulted by a thousand smells and tastes at once.

    5. Virunga Mountains, Rwanda

Gorillas have more in common with us humans than we care to admit, and observing them in the wild will convince anyone that these are some of the most amazing, intelligent and caring animals in the world. You can track them for a short while in the Virunga Mountains.

    6. Zanzibar, Tanzania

White sandy beaches, lots of Arab architecture, a rich wildlife and literally one of the spiciest places in the world (it used to be a famous spice trading post in the past).

    7. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town was voted several times among the top 5 cities in the world, and seeing the countless cultural activities, culinary delights and nightlife spots it has to offer, it’s not surprising at all. In addition to this, there are some exceptional landscapes in the area.

    8. Skeleton Coast National Park, Namibia

Once a nightmare for sailors (there are countless shipwrecks doting the coast in this area) and seemingly rather inhospitable thanks to the whale bones scattered on the beach and the almost omnipresent fog, Skeleton Coast National Park is a great place for observing wildlife.

    9. Dogon Country, Mali

Dogon Country is famous for its many scenic villages built on cliff walls over 500m high. The Dogon people who refused to convert to Islam about a 1000 years ago moved to this part of Mali and developed a unique and fascinating culture that still thrives today.

    10. Aksum, Ethiopia

The Ethiopian capital is a very old city, full of temple ruins and stelae, tall carved and painted slabs of wood or stone. Among the many archaeological attractions is the palace of the Queen of Sheba, of which only the foundation remains.
