Travelers always talk about how expensive Paris is, but the truth is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great time in this beautiful city. Sure, you can pay all the high fees to go to the museums, have 500 Euro meals, and stay in ultra luxury boutique hotels…but that’s not the only way to have a great time in Paris.
For those who don’t want to spend a lot of money or who are traveling on a budget, there are plenty of options.

First of all, be aware that spring and summer are the high season in Paris and because of that, you will pay more during these seasons than if you choose to travel during the autumn and winter months. The downside is that the ‘off season’ weather can be cold, rainy, and grey, but of course, you can also get lucky and have gorgeous sunny days at half price or less.

And besides, a day in Paris is spectacular no matter what the weather is like.
The upside, in addition to the price, is that the museums aren’t as full, the attractions aren’t filled with screaming brats, and you get to enjoy a very different cultural flavor than during other times.

Another way to save money is to book a hotel in a quarter that isn’t as popular with tourists as those in the Latin Quarter or Saint Germain de Pres. Paris is a huge city and by looking outside of the popular districts, you almost guarantee that your room will cost less. In some cases you can save more than 75% by booking a room in a less ‘hot’ quarter during the off season.

And of course, if you want to do things even cheaper, you can find a couch to surf on couchsurfing.com, but make sure you arrange it well in advance since Paris is one of the hardest cities to land a couch in.

Eating on a budget in Paris is easy. Buy most of your meals in the grocery store and give yourself just one meal a day out at a restaurant or cafe. If you avoid the heavily touristed areas, you can find a decent meal for anywhere from three to ten Euros. You can even find incredible French dinners for less than twenty Euros.

Savvy travelers like to have a big lunch (since it’s a cheaper meal) and either self cater or have a picnic dinner in one of the many scenic Paris spots with the leftovers from lunch and a little wine! Does it get any better than that?

In terms of sightseeing, everything in Paris is worth seeing and the best (and cheapest) way to see Paris is to walk. By taking long strolls and visiting graveyards, free galleries, and seeing live music in small cafes, you don’t have to spend a dime unless you want to and you get to enjoy all of the best things about Paris – on the cheap!
