India is the land of scorching heat, enticing spices and cultural diversity, perfect for a backpacking adventure in any season. But India is also famous for its wealth of romantic places and monuments. Taj Mahal is the perfect examle of enduring love transposed into a historical monuments, but there is much more to India’s heritage than this popular destination.

If you are planning for a honeymoon or a romantic summer getaway, India is the perfect combination of romance and adventure that you need. Discover places that are off the beaten track, towns, villages and cities surrounded by natural beauty and hiding architectural treasures at every corner.

Mandu, Madhya Pradesh

The ruins of the city of Mandu, in the western part of Mandhya Pradesh state of India, is an ancient fortress town with some amazing architecture. The entire structure is a story book chronicling the lives of the beautiful singer Rani Rupmati and her lover, the poet-prince Baz Bahadur.

Places of interest in Mandu include the Jami Masjid mosque, Hoshang Shah’s Tomb and the palace of Hindola Mah t the most important landmarks are the  Rupmati Pavilion and Baz Bahadur’s Palace, the former homes of the two young lovers.

Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh

Also in Madhya Pradesh can be found another one of India’s most romantic places. The Khajuraho monuments, next to the small town of Khajuraho, are one of the most popular destinations in India. These monuments are actually Hindu and Jain temples that are famous for their exquisite architecture, but also for the erotic nature of their sculptures.

These sandstone temples have a great spiritual and historical importance, but their most striking features are their extremely realistic sculptures, which earned Khajuraho a place among the seven wonders of India, and the title of Unesco World Heritage Site.

Lovedale, Tamil Nadu

Nestled in the Nilgiri Hills, this scenic little area is definitely worthy of its name. British colonists gave it its name because it recalled the foggy hills of Scotland. Despite its astounding landscapes, Lovedale has not yet been overrun with souvenir shops and cheap stands, and it pretty much looks the same as it used to at the height of the British Empire’s glory days. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the only rack railway in India,  passes through Lovedale.

Darjeeling, West Bengal

You don’t have to be a tea aficionado to enjoy a visit to Darjeeling. This little town high in the Lesser Himalaya mountains will give you a breath of fresh air after the hustle and bustle of more populated areas. Even if visiting museums is not the most romantic thing to do on a holiday, you might find some interesting sights among Darjeeling’s collection of quaint museums.

A stroll through the impressive Botanical Gardens is more in the line of a romantic getaway, so grab a thermos of delicious Darjeeling brew and take a walk along the Himalayan orchids and rhododendrons with you loved one.

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

If you are ready to go back to modern civilisation, you should head to Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s most populous states. For centuries, Lucknow has been a hub of multicultural identity and a city where culture and the arts have always been encouraged.

The city’s beautiful Raj-era architecture is harmoniously entwined with temples and mausoleums, and liberally sprinkled with sprawling fragrant mango orchards.
