World Cup matches in Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais state with its 2.5 million inhabitants is the sixth largest city in Brazil and one of the 12 cities that will host matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The city has a famous football culture, two large teams’ and especially their fans’ rivalry is what defines much of the city’s life. The two teams are the Clube Atletico Mineiro (also called ‘Galo’ – the Rooster) and Cruzeiro Esporte Clube (also called ‘Raposa’ – the Fox).

The iconic Estadio Mieirao of the city was completely renovated for the World Championship. It can accommodate nearly 57.5 thousand spectators and its lowered pitch makes it more accessible.

Also, as in the case of all renovated or newly built stadiums for the event, the arena was renovated keeping sustainability principles in mind. For instance the structure is able to capture and keep over 6 million liters of rainwater that can later be reused for watering, in toilets etc.
